The reason I decided to job shadow a family practice physician assistant is because I wanted to get a feel of what it was like to be in peds as well as in internal medicine in order to make a well informed decision of which specialty I wanted to go into. I chose to do this because I wasn't completely sure on which specialty to choose to go into and the best way to make a decision was to experience what it was like to work with a variety of patients as well as the level of experience needed for each specialty. I shadowed Marilyn Perez a family practice physician assistant at Living Water Clinic. She works under a team of doctors but is also able to diagnose, treat, and prescribe medicine like the rest of her team.
Throughout my time at the Living Water Clinic I experienced several different cases which ranged anywhere from an elderly man being at risk of becoming paralyzed to a six year old with a fever. It was interesting to see the variation in age as well as on how severe the problem is. Not long after I arrived, I realized the only ones in the office were her and the nurses who would take the patients in and inform her of the cases. It was interesting seeing the way the team worked together to get everyone helped in such a short period of time.
I'm glad I had the opportunity to job shadow Marilyn Perez because I was able to shadow someone who loves their job which we both agreed was the most important part when choosing a specialty. I liked that when I told her I was interested in becoming a pediatrician she provided me with information on the job and the prerequisites for that career as well as for the physician field. One thing that she said that really stood out was that when you get into a career like this it is very important to be sure it's what you really want because it is a lifelong commitment and for that reason it’s crucial to have a good mentor.
When I decided to job shadow someone in this career, I had originally done it to help myself make a decision on which specialty I wanted to go into but it changed my entire perspective. I listened to her to talk about the reasons why she went into this career and what she loves the most about her job and it’s similar to why I wanted to go into this field. I realized this career fitted my personality a lot better because I want to be able to come back to my hometown and help everyone in my community.
